  1. There was a special lecture by sound artist Kim Young-eun. I was thinking about art using various media these days. Through this lecture, I had the opportunity to appreciate works of art using sound and listen to explanations about sound art, which seemed to broaden my thinking. Kim Young-eun's works ranged from using certain places to making sounds related to social memory, especially those that used the characteristics of places reminded me of creative methods that I had never thought of. It reminded me of studying art works using places in the class I took last semester.

  2. I thought sound was the most abstract and difficult to understand because it was invisible. But after listening to the special lecture, I learned that sound art can embrace even intuitive and realistic topics such as social memories and daily life.

  3. In fact, until I made the poster, I couldn't easily answer what sound art would mean to a visual artist. The image in the poster is a graphical representation of the image of the sound that I thought would look like a waveform with various colors. Until then, sound was nothing but something reminiscent of waveforms and color spectra. But through the lecture, I realized that sound was a good medium for delivering messages and expressing the artist's imagination in a different way from the visual media.

When I evaluate my own work, I often judge my work too badly or too leniently. I think it's because the impression that my work gives to myself is different from what others have because only I know what process I went through. On the other hand, others' reaction to my work is more objective and focused on the work itself than on my own assessment. So it is very helpful to think about how to develop and modify works in the future.

About last week's draft. The feedback was mainly about what needs to be fixed. I accepted this feedback and decided to develop the work in a different way from the draft, and paid more attention to the sounds and images that would go into the work. And this week, feedback on the work was somewhat different from that on the draft. Although the draft did not arouse sympathy, there were classmates who sympathized with the work, and they praised the revision. In addition, there was a student who gave advice on the direction of the work. Previously, my work seemed to be just tacky, but after hearing the opinions of my classmates, I felt like I could look at it with a more objective perspective.

It took me a long time to understand because I am not good at English. But because it was hard to understand, I could concentrate more on the sound and listen to the work. Through Kim Young-eun's works, I came to think about how a work composed solely of text and sound, rather than a flamboyant visual element, can deliver messages efficiently. Just as the visual elements are cut and pasted to adjust in visual art works, sound also needs to be paid attention to the delivery of messages and adjusted to their intentions.

-Using sound grains (sound glitch) to make a difference from other works using computer voices, it created an old and broken feeling. This is because I thought it would be better to add different sounds to create a different feeling than to directly tamper with the computer's voice.

-I tried to reduce the amount of text on one screen and deliver the content as concise as possible.

-I realized that showing a badly distorted screen throughout the video interfered with the content of the text and did a different way of adding distortion effects. The video shows the content relatively clearly at first. However, around the time the audience grasps the subject, it uses a profound distortion effect to make the audience uncomfortable.

-I put the portraits or names of the writers in the middle of the video to make it clear what the video was trying to say.

It was not easy to organize the video with just text. Compared to other videos with a lot of visual elements, the video was too monotonous, and even boring to the point where the distortion effect was not severe. However, there is nothing that cannot be expressed in a video. But you have to constantly ask 'how' to find an effective delivery method. I thought the answer to the question came from constant reflection, feedback, and modification.
